How to Set Up Your Google Business Profile (And Why It Matters)

6 min read

If you only ever do one thing to market your small business online, make it this: set up your Google Business Profile properly. It's completely free, it takes a couple of hours, and it's the difference between showing up when locals search for what you do — or not.

What is a Google Business Profile? Your Google Business Profile (GBP, formerly "Google My Business") is the listing that appears on the right-hand side of search results when someone Googles your business name, and the cards that show up in the Google Maps "pack" for local searches. It's how Google tells the world your business exists, where you are, when you're open, what people think of you, and what you actually do.

Why it matters more than your website (at first) For local searches like "barber near me" or "Italian restaurant Mumbles," Google trusts your GBP listing more than your website when it decides who appears in the map pack. A well-optimised GBP can have you ranking in days — whereas website-driven SEO takes months. For most small businesses, this is the fastest possible route to new enquiries.

Get the information bang on When you set yours up, take your time and fill in everything: business name (exactly as it appears in the real world — no keyword stuffing), full address, service area, phone number, website, opening hours, and the right primary category. The category is huge — "plumber" and "emergency plumber" rank for different searches, so pick the one that matches what most of your customers want. Add secondary categories for everything else you do.

Photos matter more than you'd guess Listings with good photos get clicked roughly twice as often as listings without. Upload your logo, your premises (inside and out), your team, your work, your van — whatever's relevant. Real photos beat stock every time, and Google rewards listings that get updated regularly.

Reviews are the rocket fuel Once you're set up, start asking happy customers for reviews — every single one. The number of reviews, the star rating, and how recent they are all directly affect your ranking. Five fresh five-star reviews this month will move you up the map pack faster than almost anything else. And when you get a review (good or bad), reply to it. Google notices, customers notice, and it builds trust.

Post regularly — most people don't Most GBP listings are set up once and then forgotten. That's a huge opportunity for you. Use the "Updates" feature to post about new services, special offers, recent jobs, opening hour changes, anything. Even one post a fortnight puts you ahead of 90% of your competition and tells Google your business is active.
